(Normally, I only use this mailing list for my blog posts but I'm making another exception today because I've gotten so many questions about the message I'm sharing here today.)

A few days ago, I warned you about a Facebook scam. Today, I want to also alert you to a PayPal scam which one of my customers actually fell for. Before I do that, however, I want to give you one last opportunity to help me with my YouTube studio project and earn 15% APR interest.

As I mentioned previously, I'm under the gun to purchase the remaining equipment I need for my YouTube studio upgrade. I was able to get my vendor to extend the discount period until tomorrow, Saturday, January 27^th. Beyond that, I'll lose the generous discount the vendor is giving me. Now, The PayPal Scam

Here's the email people are receiving and, unfortunately, falling for:

Of course, the email tries to shock you into responding by showing that you purchased something around $700. The scammer wants you to react without thinking. Don't do that!

First, look at the email addres this comes from. (In the picture above, I've partially blocked it out so no one will be tempted to email the person.) As you can see, it comes from an icloud.com account. That alone should be enough to tell you that this is a scam email. Obviously, a large company like PayPal would not be sending from an icloud account.

The next hint that this is a scam has to do with the phone number listed. (I've partially blocked that, as well.) It is not their legitimate phone number. All you need to do to find out that it's a fake is Google or Bing PayPal phone number. You'll see 1 (888) 221-1161 comes up as their customer service phone number.

What other things can you consider to keep you from being scammed with this email?

If you don't have a PayPal account, this is obviously a scam and you should mark it spam/junk and/or delete it.
If you do have a PayPal account, just open a browser or their app, log in and see if there are any transactions matching the price listed in the email. (Warning: NEVER click a link in an email like this to log in as the scammer may have fake links and you won't be at PayPal at all.) When you see there aren't any transactions like that, mark the email spam/junk and/or delete.

Remember, scammers like to try to panic you into doing something without thinking. Don't fall for it! Always step back, take a breath and observe what's really going on. Stay safe!
